General Information
Cave Safety Policy
Caves can be hazardous, if the proper safety precautions are not taken. Your safety and the size of your smile are important to us. The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company make a commitment to your safety by carefully assessing clients and groups before trips depart, evaluating the hazards due to weather and water levels on a daily basis and using the best possible equipment that is continually logged, tested and upgraded. The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company guides are actively involved in search and rescue on a local and national level and we pride ourselves as an organisation having attained Occupational Safety and Health achiever status.
Our Guides
Guides are trained for the activities they run and participate in regular ongoing workshops aimed at maintaining a high level of personal skill aligned with current thinking in the NZOIA, NZQA, Mountain Safety Council, NZ Speleological Society and the Australian Cave and Karst Management Association. Guides are trained and practiced in emergency procedures and evacuations, and have current Outdoor First Aid Certificates. It needs to be noted that all adventure activities involve some degree of risk and it is how this is managed that is important.
Guide/client ratios are aligned with the national standards, being 1:4 in high risk areas and 1:6 where there is lower risk. Where conditions or the makeup of the group dictate it, extra guides are rostered to increase the safety margins.
All equipment is carefully chosen and matched to needs, inspected and logged and maintained on a regular basis. We also run a regular 'test to destruction' programme, aimed at assessing the safety factors inherent in equipment used in critical areas eg. ropes, harnesses, abseil devices etc.
The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company pride themselves in having a professional approach to deliver their products and in liaising with clients to ensure that needs are safely met and that environmental ethics are not compromised.
